About Us
Free to Be began in 1992 with a handful of volunteers and a vision to reach the youth of Sonoma County. Today, our educators speak in classrooms and to youth groups throughout Northern California, sharing the option of postponing sex until marriage.
We teach strategies for:
- Forming healthy relationships
- Setting goals
- Decision-making
- Resisting pressure
- Setting boundaries
Our seven age-appropriate program components include interactive activities and promote classroom discussion. In every presentation, Free to Be's speakers share their personal reasons for remaining abstinent and serve as role models for their peers.
A unique model
We are the only exclusively youth-taught abstinence program between the Golden Gate Bridge and the Oregon border. Our innovative peer panel approach has served as a model for teen pregnancy prevention education in other states as well as in Russia.
Why abstinence?
Free to Be believes that practicing abstinence from sexual activity is the safest and healthiest choice for teens. In addition to providing teens with accurate information, we challenge and motivate them to value themselves and their future. We provide the tools which enable them to live out their choices in confidence.
Who do we serve?
Currently, Free to Be is active in Sonoma and Napa Counties in Northern California. We speak to over 4,000 youth every year, and since 1992, we have brought our message to over 70,000 teens!
